Mercurius is in 1983 opgericht ten behoeve van scheepsmakelaardij. Het eerste motortankschip is aangekocht en in exploitatie genomen. Vervolgens verkoopt hij het schip op huurkoopbasis aan de kapitein, die daarmee economisch eigenaar van het schip is. Een succesvolle samenwerking, die inmiddels reeds bij tal van tank- en containerschepen is toegepast en bekend staat als MER-Franchising.
